Abstract

This study aims (1) to identify speech act functions addressed by Joko Widodo to bureaucrats in his speech after being appointed president of the Republic of Indonesia for the period of 2019-2024 and (2) to identify the dominant function of the speech act used in the speech. The research method used was qualitative method. The data in this study were the copy of President Joko Widodo's speech after being inaugurated. The data were downloaded from the website https://jeo.kompas.com/naskah-lengkap-pidato-presiden-joko-widodo-dalam-pelantikan periode-2019-2024 and then analyzed based on the types of speech act. Based on the analysis, it was found that the types of speech act, based on its functions, addressed to bureaucrats by President Joko Widodo in his speech were representative, directive, commissive, and declarative and the dominant function was directive. Hopefully, this study can inspire other researchers to investigate the influence of one function to another in a leader’s speech and be useful for a leader in making a speech that is powerful enough to make the bureaucrats in his or her administration do as he or she instructs them to do.
