Abstract

As one genre of literary works, poetry is a universal representation that strengthens communication
between individuals by means of language style employed by the poets. The depiction of contradictory situation
achieved through the use of paradoxes makes poetry able to stimulate the readers' analytical interpretation
because they have to reveal the meaning behind the contradictory statements. This research aimed at identifying
meaning through identification of paradoxes and the way they are expressed by means of stylistic approach in a
collection of poems, "The Sun and Her Flowers" by a famous poet on Instagram, Rupi Kaur The analysis was
based on the paradoxical features. Qualitative research in the form of content analysis was carried out with a
stylistic approach applied in poetic interpretation steps. The results showed that rhetorical paradoxes were
found with two ways of interpretation in order to understand the contradictory relationships, namely (1)
paradoxes expressed through diction and (2) paradoxes conveyed through paradoxical descriptions. The
purpose of describing contradictory atmosphere is more than just building an interpretive value for the reader.
Paradoxes also evoke the critical thinking of the readers who interpret the meaning behind the contradictory
propositions in poetry.
